About Latin for Homeschoolers
Hi, my name is Christine Hahn, and I am the owner of Latin for Homeschoolers. This is my picture. I didn’t post the product of some glamorous, dolled-up studio visit. I wanted you to see what a student sees during a typical tutoring session. I always smile when I work, because I love Latin, and I love working with my students. Even better, my students usually smile back!
I’ve been tutoring and teaching Latin since 1992, with students from the traditional and homeschooling communities, some as young as kindergarten and others as old as my parents. I have taught or tutored from over twenty different textbooks. In the early days, I tutored students at my dining room table. Later, I added weekly classes for homeschooled students in my living room (hence the name Latin for Homeschoolers). Since 2008, I’ve been tutoring online via Skype and internet whiteboard. My clients hail from around the United States, Canada, and Europe. I love that we can use technology to facilitate, not replace, the student-teacher relationship. (Check out this video for a sample of how online tutoring works.)
In early 2011, I started a new company, Elite Tutors Online, Inc., which built upon the successful foundation of Latin for Homeschoolers. We now have a team of multiple tutors in all subjects available to support students all around the world.
I’m the wife of a wonderful man and the mother of four great kids. I homeschooled my children for five years, but now they attend an excellent private school. Like most of my students and their parents, I enjoy a full, busy life. I know what it’s like to juggle homework, piano lessons, sports practices, and a zillion other commitments while running a household and growing a business all at the same time! This perspective has shaped the direction of my two companies. I’m always trying to find the most convenient, flexible way for our tutors to help students with the least amount of hassle and disruption for their families.
I would appreciate the opportunity to meet you and your student! Please don't hesitate to call me at (330)696-7493 or email me with any questions about Latin or tutoring in general.
P.S. I understand that parents want to know that Latin tutors know Latin! So here are my credentials:
- 1994, B.A. in Classical Languages and Literature magna cum laude (with high distinction), The University of Michigan
- My senior thesis discussed the treatment of Briseis as both an epic and elegiac character in Ovid's Heroides.
- Recipient, 1994 Copley Award
- Winner, 1994 Philips Classical Prize Latin Translation Competition
- Active member, American Classical League
- Presenter, Latin in the Homeschooling Community, 2011 American Classical League Convention
